When is Spring RYLA?
Spring RYLA 2020 will be taking place April 23-25, 2021.
Where is Spring RYLA?
Spring RYLA is held at Dorothy P. Flint 4-H Camp in Riverhead, New York.
How much is Spring RYLA?
Due to fundraising by our alumni, rotarians, facilitators, and senior leaders, Spring RYLA is $10 per student.
What do you do at RYLA?
The RYLA Spring Conference is packed with different activities:
Is this thing safe?
If you have severe allergies, a serious injury that could stop you from participating in some activities, mental disabilities, physical disabilities, or any other condition that requires individualized attention, PLEASE REACH OUT TO US AT ryla.rd7255@gmail.com.
There is a nurse present, who is responsible for the administration of all medications during the weekend. Please bring everything you need to the nurse upon arrival to RYLA Friday evening (prescription medication, epipens, etc). The kitchen staff will take every precaution to keep allergens away from the food, and if you have special dietary requirements we will do our best to meet them.
The entire weekend is fully staffed with volunteers. Each cabin has a chaperone and there are adults with experience dealing with serious situations available at all times, and if conditions become unsafe for any reason activities are moved to alternate locations.
What should I pack?
Even though it's Spring RYLA, Riverhead can be very cold in April, so it is highly recommended that you bring lots of layers! You will also need a flashlight, a sleeping bag, a reusable water bottle, and a few other items. A full packing list will be emailed out with the acceptance letters in February.
Can I use my cell phone?
You can bring your phone to Spring RYLA, but you should not be using it outside your cabins. During the day, you will be doing so many activities that there really won't be time to text or post to social media, and when one person is distracted by their phone it can ruin a small group dynamic. There will be time to call parents in the morning and at night, but otherwise phones really should be left alone.
Who will I be with?
RYLA is special in its ability to bring together people from all over Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens. All RYLArians are high school sophomores, who are separated into small family groups of 10-12 rylarians. Each family group is headed by two Facilitators, who are high school juniors and past RYLArians themselves. Family groups spend the entire weekend together, and are put together so there is minimal overlap from schools, which forces you to get out of your comfort zone and make new friends! It can be scary at first, but before you know it you've made 10-12 new best friends.
Where am I sleeping?
You will be assigned a cabin, which will be shared with anywhere from 6-15 other rylarians of the same gender and a chaperone. The cabins do not have individual bathrooms, so you will have to walk a short distance to the bathroom. The cabins get cold, so be sure to bring a sleeping bag!
